Blackberry refuses to let go of its famous physical keyboard even as we move into a new decade where touchscreen smartphones rule the market. OnwardMobility, who now own Blackberry’s smartphone division, are set to release a 5G mobile device later this year. This new smartphone will be launched in North America, Europe and Asia, and will feature the classic Blackberry keyboard and a suite of end-to-end security solutions.
While not many details have been shared in terms of specs, the smartphone will launch in 2021 as per CEO Peter Franklin’s comments in August last year. OnwardMobility is also known to be working with Foxconn to ensure Blackberry’s strong secure communication services reputation is kept intact. This upcoming 5G Blackberry model is confirmed to run on the Android platform, and could target enterprises and government departments with the release of this new device.
OnwardMobility took over Blackberry in 2020, after the smartphone manufacturer ended its partnership with TLC, and is looking to revive the brand with better capabilities than its recent predecessors. TLC’s BlackBerry phones had physical keyboards, too, but were not comfortable enough to type on - so this is a challenge that developers are trying to overcome: how to adapt Blackberry’s trademark QWERTY keyboard with today’s tall and narrow smartphone formats.
