This month we celebrate legendary film director Martin Scorseseā€™s 78th birthday, and throughout his over 50-year career he has created some of the most memorable films ever made which have revolutionized Hollywood across the decades. Letā€™s take a look at some of his finest works:

  • Goodfellas (1990): In this classic film about the mob, Scorsese took us into the heart of the Lucchese crime family in this thrilling yet fun story of their rise and fall. The film features actors like Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro and is inspired by real life events. In the year 2000, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significantā€ by the United States Library of Congress.

  • Taxi Driver (1976): Another classic starring De Niro, ā€˜Taxi Driverā€™ is a dark and existentialist film that focuses on Travis Bickle, a lonely taxi driver who descends into insanity in this distilled vision of the filthy, crime-ridden New York.

  • The Departed (2005): This is Scorseseā€™s only personal Oscar win despite being nominated in 9 occasions. This crime thriller stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson and Mark Wahlberg, among others. In this film the Boston Police Department and Irish mob try to race to uncover moles in their respective organizations which goes out of hand.

  • Gangs of New York (2002): Set in 1863, just as an Irish immigrant group is protesting the low wages caused by an influx of freed slaves, a Catholicā€“Protestant feud erupts into violence in the city of New York. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Daniel-Day Lewis and Cameron Diaz.

Letā€™s hope Scorsese continues to shine and produce great work in the next decade and beyond!
