Morbius

After announcing plans for a new shared universe of films inspired by Spider-Man characters that began with ā€˜Venomā€™ in 2018, ā€˜Morbiusā€™ is set to be the third installment in Sonyā€™s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) after ā€˜Venom: Let There Be Carnageā€™ in 2021. This upcoming film is directed by Swedish director Daniel Espinoza and stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, a scientist suffering from a rare blood disease who attempts to cure himself with a form of vampirism.

This is the second character in a super-hero film that Leto has played, after the disappointing reviews of ā€˜Suicide Squadā€™ (2016) where he played as The Joker. It also features Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, Morbiusā€™ friend who suffers from the same blood disease, and Tyrese Gibson as Simon Stroud, an FBI agent hunting Morbius.

Additionally, Michael Keaton will reprise his role as Vulture from the Marvel Cinematic Universe film ā€˜Spider-Man: Homecomingā€™. This is part of Sonyā€™s agreement with Disney (Marvelā€™s parent company) to extend their previous deal to keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and cross cinematic universes with the ā€œAvengersā€ timeline.

The film is set to be released in the United States on January 28, 2022 after being delayed from its initial July 2020 date due to the pandemic.
