What’s going on with everyone’s favorite Apple?

Last week, the tech giant hosted this year’s big “By Innovation Only” event on Sept 10 and unveiled the new generation of iPhones - the 11, 11 Pro and 11Pro Max, a new iPad and the Apple Watch Series 5.

So, what’s new?

All three of Apple’s new iPhones will be available on September 20, and will start at $699 for an iPhone 11 64 GB model. It features a 6.1-inch Liquid Crystal Display, the A13 bionic chipset and 12-megapixel dual cameras on the back. The 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max versions feature three cameras on the back and also include a fast 18-watt power brick charger. The 11 Pro starts at $999 for the 64 GB version and the 11 Pro Max at $1099.

Can I afford any of this?

Yes, you can. Starting at $329, the seventh generation iPad is the most affordable to date and features a 10.2-inch retina display, the advanced A10 Fusion chip and a modern camera and sensors, plus an all-day battery life. This gadget will be available in stores and online on September 30.

What about my time-telling machine?

The all-new Apple Watch Series 5 brings a larger screen and features an always-on display. This won’t eat up your battery, though, as Apple says you can expect an 18-hour charge. The Series 5 is starting at $499 on September 20.

The whole world will gather on Friday July 24th, 2020 to witness the opening ceremony for the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics, and this time the goal is to spread a message of environmental sustainability to the world.

Since 2017, the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games collected small electronic devices from all over Japan to produce the Olympic Medals, and in March 2019 the project was finished. All gold, silver and bronze medals are made out A total of 78,985 tons of metals from recycled and used cell phones, laptops, video game consoles, and cameras!

What makes the project special is the public interest and assistance from Japan’s citizens who powered the creation of the roughly 5000 medals for the Games. In total, around 70 pounds of gold, more than 7,000 pounds of silver and almost 5,000 pounds of bronze were gathered from hundreds of local sources.

Local municipal authorities gathered more than 6 million mobile phones from stores across Japan, and more than 78,000 tons of other small electronic devices. These electronic devices were classified, dismantled and then smelted, where the gold, silver and bronze are extracted to create the medals.

The Committee also looks to establish a theme of resourcefulness for the games and contribute to an environmentally friendly and sustainable society by using recycled household and marine plastic to create podiums for the medal ceremonies. Moreover, the metal that isn’t used in the medals will be used for medals in local competitions in the future.

It’s hard to think that a device that plays such an important role in modern everyday life could be considered an addiction. The truth is that around 60 to 70 per cent of smartphone owners describe themselves as “too reliant” on them, and the average adult spends approximately from 2 to 4 hours on their smartphone every day.

From drivers using phones behind the wheel and an increase in injuries on pedestrians related to their mobiles to it impacting their social life and even mental health, smartphone addiction is a very real issue. It can also worsen our concentration, as frequent distraction from our smartphones affects the capability of the brain to maintain a longer focus in any activity.

Don’t get hooked! Social Media apps are designed to produce short-term, dopamine-driven loops on their users, so they can crave them at any time and any place. Social media stimulates the brain’s pleasure centers as much as what food and sex do. This can be especially valuable for social media platforms, as they can sell advertisers the attention of millions of people.

While there is nothing inherently addictive about mobile phones, potentially being in contact with 2 billion people around the world, and thousands of games and movies being at the reach of a person’s pocket can create a strong attachment between the owner and the smartphone. Increased levels of smartphone use can ultimately relate to anxiety and depression, poor sleep quality and risk or car accidents.

Shock! Horror! It’s time to stop and think just how much time we actually spend on our smartphones. Stop for a second there and enjoy the greenery!

The Joker has been one of Batman’s most recognized supervillains, appearing for the first time on the actual debut issue of the comic book ‘Batman’. While lacking any superhuman abilities, Arthur Fleck is a criminal mastermind with a sadistic sense of humor who dresses up as a joker and uses his expertise to try and kill his adversaries.

Joaquin Phoenix is the seventh actor to portray the Joker in a film, after Jared Leto’s and Heath Ledger’s modern interpretations of the character. For the role, Phoenix lost a noticeable amount of weight in preparation, and based his laughs on videos he studied of people suffering from “pathological laughter”.

The film is an exploration of Fleck’s disregard by society, as an impoverished stand-up comedian who seeks revenge on his detractors. It is directed by Todd Phillips (from The Hangover and Borat fame) and its script was inspired in Martin Scorsese’s films Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and The King of Comedy.

Joker will first be screened at the Venice Film Festival on August 31, 2019, and also be shown at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9, 2019. After that, the film is scheduled to be released in the US on October 9, 2019.

A budget of $55 million is what was used for production, and experts are expecting ‘Joker’ to gross $60-90 million during its opening weekend in the US and Canada. If the film performs well, Phillips would be interested in producing a sequel.

The waiting game begins to see if Todd Phillips–directed, Joaquin Phoenix–starring Joker film will be monumentally awesome of not, but one thing’s for sure: it will be an interesting flick to catch at the theater. Whatever doesn’t kill you…
